Description

The Antiquitin enzyme is a multifunctional enzyme that is found within the cell in the cytosol and the mitochondria. It is involved in lysine catabolism, and it metabolizes betaine aldehyde to betaine, an important cellular osmolyte and methyl donor.  Mutations in this gene are the cause of pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Almost all of these mutations are specific to single families.
